Food Driver/Hub Support

As a Food Driver, you will support the London Food Coalition’s mission by picking up food donations from donors, fostering positive relationships, and ensuring food is efficiently sorted, stored, and distributed to coalition member organizations.

Tasks 

  • Food Donation Collection: Collect food from scheduled donor locations (e.g., stores, farms, restaurants). Maintain positive donor relationships through clear communication, timely service, and coalition updates. Provide receipts and answer donor questions as needed.

  • Transportation & Handling: Safely transport food to the Food Hub, ensuring proper handling to preserve quality. Load/unload donations using safe lifting techniques and minimize waste or damage during transit.

  • Sorting & Organization: Sort donations by type, quality, and storage needs. Follow food safety and hygiene standards. Organize and store food efficiently for easy access and distribution.

  • Distribution Support: Assist with distributing food to member organizations. Support pick-up operations and ensure accurate allocation. Communicate with partners to meet specific food needs.

  • General Support & Reporting: Keep accurate records of food collected, including donor details and quantities. Help optimize routes and schedules. Provide feedback to improve operations and donor engagement.

Time commitment

  • Weekdays, not earlier than 6 a.m. or later than 10 a.m.

  • We operate Monday to Friday as well as a single run on Sundays.

  • We ask that you attend at least one shift every two weeks 

  • Please sign up in advance to ensure that all shifts are covered.

Location

  • The Food Hub is located at Glen Cairn Community Resource Centre at 244 Adelaide Street South

  • We are serviced by the London Transit Commission via route 16 SB at stop 86 (from Pond Mills) and 16 NB (from Masonville Mall) at stop 50.

  • Free parking is available on-site

  • Food Rescue: Your support in the collection and organization of food helps us rescue an average of 10,000 pounds of food weekly, preventing it from going to waste.

  • Community Impact: Your efforts help us to distribute food to 27 member organizations  which include shelters, meal programs, and agencies serving vulnerable populations across London

  • Sustainability: Your work helps to create food prosperity for people throughout London while reducing our environmental footprint by diverting food from landfills.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Valid G Class driver’s license with a clean driving record (and provision of a Service Ontario Driving Record).

  • Transferrable automobile insurance (minimum liability $2 million recommended).

  • Be a minimum of 25 years of age (copy of valid Driver's License required).

  • Provision of a satisfactory Ontario Driving Abstract (see here).

  • Experience with loading, unloading, and handling perishable and non-perishable items.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build and maintain donor relationships.

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy items (up to [weight limit, e.g., 50 lbs.]).

  • Organizational skills to manage schedules and prioritize tasks effectively.

  • Knowledge of food safety practices and protocols (an asset but not required).

  • Commitment to supporting community food prosperity and reducing food waste.

Please note: all volunteers with the London Food Coalition must have an annual Vulnerable Sector Police Check on file. New volunteers without a police check are asked to provide a receipt for payment to show that the process has been initiated (most VSCs are provided within 2 weeks) before they may begin volunteering.
